Be a magazine literacy champion!

Today I was invited to do a podcast interview… more on that in another post. It got me thinking, if I had just a few minutes to reach out with our most important message, it would be this: Be a literacy champion in your own community by finding literacy programs that are working hard every day to teach children and families how to learn and love to read. Ask them what their needs are. What materials and subjects will inspire these new readers? Then organize your friends, family, neighbors, and colleagues to adopt these readers and to supply them with interesting, enjoyable magazines. I was called by a woman yesterday who wanted to do this very thing for children in a foster care group home. As often happens in this wonderful business, without realizing it, I’m sure, she said something to me that I will never forget. She mentioned that, in working with these foster children, she was amazed how many arrive without being able to read and then learn to read well in front of her very eyes. So, be a magazine literacy champion in your own community, like this woman.
